Risk Talks: Leaders and Innovation in Risk Management gather in Porto

A Risk Talks reuniu especialistas e líderes para discutir os principais desafios da gestão de riscos em 2024.

On February 28th, the Grand Auditorium of ISCAP, in Porto, was the stage for the impactful debut of “Risk Talks: Beyond Uncertainty”. The two-hour event attracted the attention of ISCAP students and professionals from various companies.

A highlight of the program was the analysis of the C2R Top 10 Risks, led by Sérgio Resende (RMP/C2R), which was complemented by an insightful session on risk management trends led by Pedro Cilínio, former Secretary of State for Economy.

The highlight of the evening was the roundtable moderated by João Luís de Sousa (Vida Económica), which brought together influential leaders such as João Pedro Azevedo (CEO of Amorim Cork Composites), visionary entrepreneur André Vieira de Castro and Marcos Polónia (Director of Credit and Guarantee MDS).

During the discussion, João Pedro Azevedo highlighted the proactive role of ACC in dealing with risks and contemporary issues, including the emphasis on gender equality, training and sustainable initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions. When the company saw competitors gaining market share with synthetic corks, Amorim turned this risk into an opportunity by maintaining its focus on cork, ensuring product quality while contributing to more sustainable production.

With risk uncertainty being a constant, resilience becomes a necessity in organizations. In this context, André Vieira de Castro highlighted the crucial importance of risk management for the survival of companies, emphasizing geopolitical risk as one of the main ones. He categorized the challenges into three types: connected risks, cumulative risks and novel risks, highlighting the need for stress testing to anticipate and mitigate potential threats.

Marcos Polónia, representing the perspective of an insurance broker, warned of common mistakes in internationalization strategies, such as neglecting the analysis of the foreign market and the various risks faced by companies. In an environment where financial risk is a constant, the Credit Director stressed the crucial importance of adopting adequate insurance during internationalization processes.

Risk Talks, an initiative of C2R – Control to Risk, organized by Risk Management Projects (RMP) and the Center for Organizational and Social Studies of the Polytechnic of Porto (CEOS.PP), has the essential support of the Institute of Accounting and Administration of Porto (ISCAP), Porto Executive Academy (PEA) and AEP Foundation. This event consolidates the joint commitment to foster enriching dialogues on risk management, providing a vital platform for interaction between professionals, academics and students in the area.
